Understanding the current state of voluntary biodiversity markets

Pollination has carried out the most extensive global survey to date of biodiversity credit schemes. This process has created three distinct documents, each of which can be downloaded below.

New voluntary biodiversity credit schemes are rapidly emerging in the wake of growing commitment to advance the global nature-positive agenda. Given the pace of this transition, it can be hard for potential market participants, including buyers and project proponents, to understand the overall state of the market and what scheme attributes are most important for delivering high quality outcomes.

To fill this knowledge gap, Pollination has carried out the most extensive global analysis to date of voluntary biodiversity credit schemes. Pollination has created three review frameworks to support the comparative analysis of biodiversity credit schemes: a design framework, integrity framework and technical framework. Using these frameworks, Pollination analysed eight biodiversity credit schemes, providing an unparalleled view of the supply side of this fast-emerging market.

The State of Voluntary Biodiversity Credit Markets Global Review is an independent report, commissioned by environmental markets investor and project developer GreenCollar, which identifies key characteristics and market trends across the 8 schemes. It also identifies six key attributes of voluntary biodiversity credit schemes that should be prioritised for improvement over coming years.

This analysis was commissioned by Australian environmental markets investor and project developer GreenCollar. Pollination was engaged to carry out an independent, comparative review of Green Collar’s NaturePlusTM Scheme against other emerging schemes across design, integrity and technical considerations.

This process has created three distinct documents, each of which can be downloaded below.

The first report identifies key characteristics and market trends across the eight schemes and also identifies six key attributes of voluntary biodiversity credit schemes that need significant development over coming years. It is required reading for anyone seeking an overview of this rapidly-emerging market.

Pollination has also published the review frameworks created for this analysis in the hope that they will prove a useful tool for participants in voluntary biodiversity credit markets, including scheme and project developers, buyers and investors. We make these frameworks freely available to all and look forward to refining and iterating them as these markets mature. Please fill the form below to view and download this document.
