John E. Morton rejoins Pollination from Biden Administration to lead firm’s advisory business
18 January 2023
John E. Morton has rejoined global climate change investment and advisory firm Pollination as a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and as Managing Director, Global Head of Advisory. He returns to Pollination after serving for two years as the U.S. Treasury Department and Secretary Janet Yellen’s inaugural Climate Counselor. In this role, he managed and coordinated the Department of Treasury’s historically ambitious climate change strategy and policies.
John’s unique breadth of experience spans the private sector, Government, philanthropy, and multi-lateral development banks. Over the course of his three-decade career, John’s work has focused on how to expedite the transition to a low carbon economy, and he has been at the forefront of designing and structuring some of the most innovative platforms and investment vehicles to mobilize private capital flows into fast-growing global markets.
During the Obama Administration, John served as the President’s White House Senior Director for Energy and Climate Change, and previously as the Chief of Staff and Chief Operating Officer at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (now the U.S. Development Finance Corporation). Outside of Government, John was formerly Managing Director of Economic Policy at The Pew Charitable Trusts, a private equity investor with the Global Environment Fund, and strategy consultant.
Co-founding Partner and CEO of Pollination Martijn Wilder AM commented: “We’re thrilled that John is returning to Pollination after an immensely productive role in the Biden Administration on climate. With John’s leadership, Pollination will continue its expansion in both the U.S. market and globally.”
John E. Morton said: “I am delighted to be returning to Pollination and to a world class team committed to helping drive the transition to a global low carbon economy. Pollination has a combination of talent spanning investment, strategy, policy, regulatory and legal expertise, that is truly unique in the industry.”
“The scale of the climate challenge is matched only by the size of the investment opportunity presented by the transition to net zero. All around the world, we are seeing policies and regulations align to incentivize and expedite the decarbonization of the global economy, while at the same time costs of underlying technologies continue to fall dramatically. At Pollination, I look forward to working with clients and partners to design strategies and investments to capitalize on this historic economic shift.”
“This new alignment brings tremendous opportunities for individual companies and will be a real spur to action. Pollination’s mix of advisory and asset management strengths in climate and nature, combined with a unique track record in blended climate finance, make us a compelling partner for forward-thinking executive teams across economic sectors.”
Having launched in 2019 across EMEA, APAC and North America, Pollination now has a global team of more than 200, with an extensive track-record of high impact work. The breadth of its U.S. led work includes structuring new blended finance climate investment vehicles for multilateral institutions, building a decarbonization platform for a major private equity house, and developing net zero and nature positive strategies for several national commodity boards representing hundreds of US companies.
In the U.S., Pollination also recently welcomed Managing Director Cameron Prell, a recognized leader in carbon markets, experienced in policy and law as well as building digital platforms for energy and environmental markets. John and Cameron join existing North American Managing Directors Rick Saines, Marisa Martin and Nick Anstett.
