To get a sense of how global nature finance is evolving, we asked a range of institutional investors about their experiences investing in nature. We uncovered their motivations, ambitions, and what they consider to be the greatest risks and opportunities in the nature space – forming the backbone of the inaugural Pollination Nature Finance Focus report.
View reportClimate Asset Management, the specialist “natural capital” investment manager formed by HSBC Asset Management (HSBA.L) and climate change advisory firm Pollination Group, said it has raised $650 million for projects which aim to protect the environment.
Its investors are corporates, ranging from some of the top global 100 companies to smaller niche players, Martin Berg, CAM’s chief investment officer, said. Rather than financial returns, these investors will receive carbon credits.
“We thought the main target (for the funds) would be institutional investors but we now recognise corporates are key players … they are really becoming (big) investors in this,” he said.
Through its Natural Capital Strategy’s flagship 15-year Natural Capital Fund, CAM is targeting a 10% return on investment before fees on projects in regenerative agriculture and forestry in developed markets. CAM’s second strategy, its Nature Based Carbon Strategy, taps into increasing corporate demand for verifiable carbon offsets and will finance nature-based carbon projects in developing economies.

Nature is experiencing dangerous deterioration with one million species threatened with extinction, drying up of water sources and soil infertility. In attempt to halt and reverse current loss of nature, the Global Goal for Nature was rolled out in 2022 alongside the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to guide global actions on nature and to achieve nature positive by 2030, measured against a baseline of 2020.
The nature-climate nexus is becoming apparent, as protecting and restoring nature is critical for mitigating climate change and achieving net-zero emissions globally. Malaysia, as the 17th most biodiverse country in the world, offers a carbon crediting potential of up to 40 million tons of CO2 annually through NBS projects, equivalent to 3 percent of the world’s NBS potential (McKinsey Analytics). Leveraging its extensive forest cover, the nation is poised to become an NBS powerhouse.
This session will discuss the role of NBS in achieving nature positive by 2030, the expected market trajectory, opportunities & challenges, as well as what are the policies/ framework that could streamline and fast-track the investment & deployment of NBS. Spotlight should also be given on megadiverse countries, including Malaysia, on how to unlock the NBS market in these regions.
Speaker: Pollination Managing Director Rick Saines

The Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Financial Services Taskforce (FSTF) is working with the Mangrove Breakthrough (MB) initiative from the UN Climate Change High-level Champions to support the development of a set of guiding principles to facilitate private capital funds into NbS projects. The focus on the work is on coastal ecosystems as a well-known case study (yet still widely unfunded). The aim is to use these biomes as an example on actions that should be taken to support project developer in elevating their interventions to be investable and/or bankable.
The aim of this session is to showcase to a wider group the power of collaboration among private institutions, NGOs and civil society, in addressing biodiversity loss.

Vast amounts of capital will be required to triple the installed capacity of renewables by 2030 across the world. International carbon markets are an integral element of the climate policy architecture that can help countries reduce their greenhouse gas emissions cost-effectively, achieve climate targets articulated under their nationally determined contributions, and raise ambition over time. The landscape of the international carbon market is evolving and expected to be quite diverse as carbon credits can be used for compliance as well as voluntary purposes within or beyond national jurisdictions. It is particularly encouraging to see the growing momentum for international carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement as well as the Voluntary Carbon Markets.
While these carbon markets bring opportunities, they also bring challenges due to their close linkages such as the impact of domestic markets on supply-demand dynamics in international carbon markets, which calls for strategic thinking in devising national strategies.
In this event, ADB will convene international experts and policymakers for an insightful conversation on how to view carbon market opportunities holistically and systematically devise national strategies to participate in and take advantage of international carbon markets.
