To get a sense of how global nature finance is evolving, we asked a range of institutional investors about their experiences investing in nature. We uncovered their motivations, ambitions, and what they consider to be the greatest risks and opportunities in the nature space – forming the backbone of the inaugural Pollination Nature Finance Focus report.
View reportClimate Asset Management, the specialist “natural capital” investment manager formed by HSBC Asset Management (HSBA.L) and climate change advisory firm Pollination Group, said it has raised $650 million for projects which aim to protect the environment.
Its investors are corporates, ranging from some of the top global 100 companies to smaller niche players, Martin Berg, CAM’s chief investment officer, said. Rather than financial returns, these investors will receive carbon credits.
“We thought the main target (for the funds) would be institutional investors but we now recognise corporates are key players … they are really becoming (big) investors in this,” he said.
Through its Natural Capital Strategy’s flagship 15-year Natural Capital Fund, CAM is targeting a 10% return on investment before fees on projects in regenerative agriculture and forestry in developed markets. CAM’s second strategy, its Nature Based Carbon Strategy, taps into increasing corporate demand for verifiable carbon offsets and will finance nature-based carbon projects in developing economies.

The Climate Finance Leadership Initiative (CFLI) was formed by Michael R. Bloomberg at the request of the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres. The CFLI aims to achieve that goal by bringing together leading institutions across the financial value chain, working alongside corporates, policymakers, and multilateral institutions, to identify barriers to investment and support solutions that accelerate financing for low-carbon and climate-resilient projects in emerging markets.
At the invitation of Bancolombia, Pollination Managing Director Gavin Templeton took part in a panel discussion today to talk about how the CFLI is supporting the mobilisation of private finance in response to the challenges of climate change in Colombia and other emerging markets.
Gavin discussed the 4 priority thematic areas for Colombia which are timely, high-impact, and ideal for public-private collaboration: Low-Carbon Transportation; Renewable Alternatives; Nature, Resilience, and Adaptation; and Sustainable Infrastructure. And he explained why it is critical – in the Colombian and global context – that they are underpinned by a Just Transition, ensuring financial and social inclusion.
Gavin spoke alongside Juan Carlos Mora CEO, Bancolombia; Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for Egypt; María del Pilar Restrepo Orjuela, Climate Finance Director, DNP, and the panel was moderated by María Alejandra Gonzalez, Global Council and Full Professor of Management, EAFIT.
